Not only did I start work for a new company but I also became a Creative Director for the first time.
The company? Hot Can, Inc. (www.hot-can.com). The company makes a fairly unique product. Self heating beverages and soups. The idea being that you have a regular soda sized can and, with a push of a button (and a short wait of three minutes) you have a hot cup of coffee, hot chocolate, tea, or soup.
The challenge for me is how to brand the company. And, for the first time I am involved in planning the social media strategy of the company. I love learning new things and challenging myself so I am really looking forward to getting my teeth into this project . . . . There were games like Chutes and Ladders and this one, Ludo, which I used to play as a child.

What struck me were the graphics. Although this is a modern day copy they kept true to the style and the techniques that were available in those days. The color pallet and the simplicity of the type treatments were refreshing in todays day and age of Illustrator and Photoshop.

When I started in graphic design the Mac was just coming out and desk top publishing was still in its infancy. Anything below 12 point was typeset on an IBM composer and anything above 12 point was dry rubbed with Letraset. Drop shadows were done with an airbrush and all final artwork was covered in light blue lines and glued to a board.

I remember my first introduction to Adobe Illustrator a few years later (I think it had just upgraded to 3.2) at Macworld, London. Type on a curve was done in an extension and imported into Illustrator. I watched as the demonstrator set up the curve and started typing. Afterwards he decided that the letters were too close together and altered it in program in a couple of seconds. I remember hearing someone laughing hysterically and then, realized it was me. We bought our first Mac (an Apple LC) and a copy of Illustrator during that same show.

Back to the game box. I've files this away because I so want to use this style for a future job. Maybe a food line.

Disney poster

Another great poster taken at Disneyland. I commented on how great the posters were that decorated the walls of the ride. I was back at Disneyland this weekend and took some photos of the posters along with a lot of other stuff that I will share in the not so distant future.

The line was about an hour long so I got to look at the posters in detail. There isn't a large block of solid color anywhere. Patterns and textures fill the whole poster but enhance the message, not detract from it. The red in the center brings your eye straight to it (as does the angle of the main box, tapering towards the center) and on the way guides you through all the information you need to know.

Here's another one, same principles, red in the middle and all the elements work together to bring your eye to the center. As a graphic designer I constantly walk around looking at signs, packaging, web sites and Disneyland provides that in abundance. While standing in line for the Toy Story ride I started admiring the fairground posters that are displayed every 10 feet. The posters (for those of you that have never visited the park or have never noticed them) are based on the traditional circus and fairground posters. The Toy Story characters are depicted on each poster. Check them out next time your there.

Retro Time Logo

I’ve just completed a logo for a client who specializes in memorabilia from the 1950’s. The inspiration for this logo came from the style of that decade. I came to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter if I working on a logo, a web site, packaging or a complete brand identity the process follows a very distinct pattern.

1) Excitement in starting a new project and the possibilities it holds.

2) Panic. “What the hell am I doing, I have no idea how to do this, the client will hate it, I’m a fraud.” This is soon replaced by step 3.

3) Research. I scour the web for ideas and thoughts. Seeing what others have done but only for direction, never to copy. I read design books, Magazines (not necessarily design based) for ideas. I gather these ideas on the electronic job folder for later reference.

4) Usually coinciding with #3 are the thumbnail sketches. No matter how good the computers or software gets I believe there is no substitute for a pad of paper and a pencil. It is the quickest way to get thoughts on paper and the best media for retrieving those thoughts.

5) Start work translating thumbnails into digital format (Using Adobe CS)

6) Repeat #2 for a while, drink wine, give up, go to bed.

7) Wake up, review work. Realize that I’m not a total moron. Continue with work, finish work, present to client.

What makes a logo recognizable?

In a recent conversation with a client it was suggested that we could change the color of their logo to match the postcard I was designing for them . . . “Apple does it all the time!”.

I responded with “Yes, but they’re, well . . . . .Apple”

So, what makes a good logo, or more to the point what makes components of a good logo recognizable?

1) COLOR: Starbucks. How many of you have been driving along wanting a cup of coffee staring at the buildings going by, looking for a Starbucks? OK, pretty much everyone, right? So, what are you looking for? The word “Starbucks”?, The little mermaid graphic? (Did you even know it was a mermaid?) . . . . No, everyone is looking for the big green circle. Can anyone tell me right now what font Starbucks use? How about if it’s serif or san serif? No? . . . That’s because the most important thing about their logo is the color green and the fact it’s a circle. Remember a few years ago Starbucks went back to their roots to dispel the whole corporation tag that they were getting? Some raving intellectual decided that the smart thing to do would be to change the one thing that customers identify with (the green circle) and make it brown. The only thing they kept (other than the circular shape was the mermaid (which nobody looks at) and they change it. They instantly lost their brand recognition and within a few months changed the logo back.

2) SHAPE: Apple can change the color of their logo as they have done many times because the main focus of the Apple logo is the shape not the color. They have a very simple shape, which has a very distinct look. Take any fruit (or vegetable for that matter) and cut out a semi circular shape out of it and you will automatically think of the Apple logo. Similarly if you take the Apple logo and make it bright orange you will still know it is the Apple logo. Where color (and texture) does come into play with Apple is with theirs brand. The stark, brushed metal, minimalism of their products, ads and stores give them a distinct look.

So, if we can take any fruit and take a chunk out of it and it looks like the Apple logo then the most important element of the logo is not the apple itself but the bite mark.

3) On occasion all that is needed is a strong type treatment. Most logos for movies are based on a unique type treatment. But even the business world relies on type treatments to get brand recognition. Look at Coca-Cola, Disney, IBM. It doesn’t matter what color they are you know who they are.

So, in conclusion, what makes a logo distinctive? I think the old saying “Keep it simple” says it all. A simple shape, a single color, a readable typeface.

Apple® is a trademark of Apple Inc.

Starbucks is a trademark of Starbucks Corporation.

Blue Monkey Bakery Logo

I have always loved cartoons but have never been very good at drawing them. When I started most graphic design was done on boards with an Xacto knife and glue. Photos were screened on a camera and the thought of type on a curve gave the best of us anxiety.

Typography and proof reading were separate skills performed by separate people, and photographers, designers and copywriters all worked together and sung for peace. There was structure and a hierarchy to the graphics industry and there was happiness throughout the land.

When desktop publishing came along I knew that this was the future so I bought a Mac and a copy of Adobe Illustrator (3.0 I think) and locked myself in a room for a week. Then came the “I can do that” mentality from clients who bought a Mac and a copy of Quark or PageMaker and soon realized that there wasn’t a “Create Brand” or “Design Logo” filter in Photoshop.

The next path on the journey was the World Wide Web. Seeing the writing on the wall I started learning Dreamweaver, Flash, and acclimatized myself with the idiosyncrasies of web design. This was a necessary evil but did give us a preview of what was to come. Actionscript, Java, PHP, and a multitude of other programming languages soon reared their ugly heads.

“Social Media” was next. We had to promote for our clients using SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, Blogging, e-blasts, the list goes on.

Now we are expected to design, photograph, program, write, promote, and sell. All separate careers a few years back.

I guess my point is to ask the question “where will it end?” Don’t get me wrong. I’m up for a challenge. I actually like designing web sites in Flash, I use Facebook and Twitter on a regular basis and obviously, I blog. I find SEO interesting (What can I tell you; I’m a geek . . . . Well, at least we’ll inherit the earth!) but all of these things should be a bonus to anyone who wants to hire me, not a requirement to even get an interview.

So, Here is an ad for the next wave of graphic designers:

“Graphic Designer/SEO Specialist/Shiatsu Massage Therapist Wanted.
Must be fluent in HTML, Ebonics, Morse Code, and Aramaic.
Compensation: Dependent on ability to juggle (balls, fire sticks and chainsaws)

New Web Site

A few months back I was asked to design and develop a portfolio web site for the photographer Jose-Gilberto Izquierdo.
I love designing web sites for artists. This gives me the license to create a work of art of my own.

After reviewing the images and talking with the artist I had a clear idea of how I wanted the site to look and more importantly, feel. The usual week of heading down the Jersey shore with friends (commonly referred to as “Abuse your body week”) hadn’t panned out. So, on a whim I decided to visit somewhere that I had always wanted to shoot. That day I booked a ticket and hotel in New Orleans. Initially I tried to stay away from Bourbon Street. One of the first things I do when arriving in a place is to ask a local where they hang out. “Not Bourbon Street” was pretty much the consensus. So I visited the Garden District, the above ground cemeteries, and even found myself on an airboat in the middle of the swamp.

My hotel was right in the middle of the French Quarter so I couldn’t avoid Bourbon Street for long so one night I set out, camera in hand. Bourbon Street is usually dead during the day and comes alive at night. So, with high speed film and no flash I started walking. It’s actually a fun place to be after dark (albeit tacky in places). There is an energy there that I have only found in London and New York. I saw the band playing in this bar and knew I wanted a shot from outside looking in. I then had to wait for the right people to walk into the frame. The girl was already there but it needed people on the left to frame the shot. I took about three shots and on the final one, one of the guys turned his head and looked into the bar.

One of the things I like about this image is that there are a number of stories going on. Inside the bar you have the musicians and the people sitting down listening. You have the two men walking past and looking in, and finally you have the girl below the sign presumably waiting for someone. I think a good photo is like a good book, It leads you in, tells it’s story, but leaves you to decide what happens after the final page is read. For all you Photogs out there, It was shot on T-Max 1600 pushed two stops to give 6400 ASA. It was shot around 125th (no idea what f-stop). The grain is natural due to the high speed of the film although a little noise was added to smooth out some of the gradients.

Girl on Paris Metro

This shot was taken on the Paris Metro back in 2003. I had gone back to England with my, then, girlfriend. We had spent time in London visiting friends and them met up with my dad for a trip on the EuroStar to Paris. The camera was down by my hip (something I tried and liked in New Orleans, It gives a different perspective having the camera down that low).

When I took the shot I had no idea that the girl was looking straight at the camera. She doesn’t look upset, it’s just a matter of fact stare. The lines of the train then lead you further down the carriage to the man sitting next to her listening to music and on to the man sleeping with his arms folded. I like photographing people in their surroundings. I often wonder what these peoples lives might be like. Maybe the girl then went home and complained to her boyfriend that “some asshole on the train today took my photo” I think this was my last trip using film.

Sharing

I was hosting a get together at my house a few weeks back. I was watching my daughter, with a borrowed camera, walking around the garden taking photographs of people. I talked to her afterwards and asked her if she enjoyed taking photographs. She said she did so I suggested that the following weekend we go out shooting in Balboa Park. She seemed excited so, it was a date.

We woke early the following Sunday and headed to the park. After stopping for coffee and a brief introduction to my back up camera we set off.

One of the first thing we came across was a pair of ducks that seemed as interested in us as we did of them. I showed Kari how to get down (or up) to the level of the subject and went off to see what I could find. When I returned I found her on her belly, hanging over a wall with the ducks a few feet away.

Next stop was MOPA (Museum of Photographic Arts). They had a show on Ansel Adams. Now, I’ve never really been an Ansel fan (he never spoke very highly of me either so were pretty much even) but I can’t deny his expertise. There we learned the rule of thirds and the fact that it is OK to break the rule when needed.

After that we went to the International Village. The lesson here was how to approach people and take their photo. (Always smile, ask permission, and say thank you)

My point to this blog entry is that I realized how my father felt when I showed an interest in photography some 30 or so years ago. Sometimes life isn’t about what you did do or are going to do. Sometimes it’s just about sharing something you love with others and hoping that they will love it too. We have the next trip already planned.

Upcoming Show

It's been a while since I last updated this blog but I wanted to announce an upcoming show with two other photographers. The premise of times3 is how different photographers perceive time. To add another dimension to the mix we are each showing two portfolios of work. One of past work and one of current work showing how we each have changed artistically over time. Please feel free to join us for the artists reception on Sunday May 3rd from 1:30 until 4:30 pm.

Wine Bar Window

For the past few years now I have been shooting digital. When I first went to the dark side I would always bring along a film camera. I felt like I was cheating on film with digital if I didn't bring one along. Unable to cut the analogue umbilical cord I would wander around with an extra few pounds in my camera bag which I knew when packing it, would never be used. Eventually I stopped bringing it. I stopped calling, I'd never write ("It's me, not you, I just need space"). Recently I unpacked an old twins lens reflex camera and decided to take it out for the day (under the specific understanding that we were just good friends"). Of course I also took my digital camera along for the ride, a photographic threesome if you will.

So, the three of us hit the streets of downtown San Diego one rainy Sunday morning. I had known it was going to rain in advance and was actually looking forward to the rain. It very rarely rains in San Diego and I love shooting in wet weather because the colors are always richer and the reflections you get bouncing off the water are great.

How can I compare a new digital SLR camera to an old, film, twin lens reflex.? Well, think of the digital as a brand new BMW 7 series with GPS, anti lock brakes, power steering and everything else that a car with that kind of price tag comes with. Now, compare the Twin lens film camera with an old Volkswagen with a window missing and a brake pedal that requires both feet to stop. Sure, the BMW is a great car, comfortable, luxurious. . . but who's driving who? I also took along a light meter. The twin lens doesn't even have a built in light meter, you have to take readings externally and then dial them into the camera, then you look down through the top of the camera to compose the shot. Everything is reversed in the viewfinder, it's difficult to focus (manual also) and you only have 12 shots on one roll of film. Twelve shot!!!! My digital can take twelve shots in under three seconds. On my last outing I shot 800 photos in two days!!! How am I going to survive on twelve shots! . . . . . . OK, Breath Paul, Breath.

The funny thing is. I was actually fine with twelve shots. I found myself relaxing, taking my time. On top of that there is also the cost of the camera . . . . Pretty much worthless! When your walking around the city with $3k of equipment you tend to spend a lot of time looking around to make sure that you're not about to be mugged. But with a low cost camera: "You want this? Sure, take it, and here's some cash for your psychiatric evaluation" . . . . . Try and take my digital and at the very least you'll be walking away with nokiN indented on your forehead for a while.

There is also other peoples perception of you. With an expensive camera people feel threatened. They imagine you to be some paparazzi vulture and that their mug shot will appear on the front page of the "Daily Crap" next to a photograph of Britany freaking out because her new house has a flat tire. With an old camera people just see you as a hobbyist and therefore less threatening. (NOTE: This theory does not work outside schools or play parks :-) )

OK, the whole point to my ramblings (and yes, there is, for once a point) is that I realized that the tools I'm using somewhat dictate how I take photographs. Not in regards to the subject matter, but definitely in my frame of mind.

Camera Phone

So, I recently bought a new camera phone. Originally constructed so that dock workers in South London could get to work quickly, it is now used by pedestrians getting to and from the newly built Canary Wharf. When I was young I used to visit Greenwich Park with friends. We used to run down thie tunnel screaming and yelling (the echo is incredible). I've been meaning to photograph it for a long time but there was never an opportunity. I visited Greenwich for the first time in over 15 years when I returned to London with my family for Christmas this year.

The tunnel is exactly as I remember it except that the old wood lined elivators which were opporated by doormen in uniform have now been replaced by automatic, aluminum ones. The tunnel id only nine feet wide and as you get to the northern end it narrows even further due to large iron rings that were put there after a bomb damaged the tunnel during World War II.

Bank Job Ends In Shooting!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I spent a day with fellow photographer (and partner in crime for the Abandoned Americana project) traveling Rt. 94 a few weeks back shooting a few locations along the route from Spring Valley all the way to old Rt. 80.

Black and White Magazine's Web Site Of The Month

Black and White Photography is an excellent magazine from the U.K.

I first heard that I was in this months issue when I got an e-mail from Italy from fellow photographer Tiberio Fanti (www.tiberiofanti.it). It is a remarkable place and I am saddened by the disaster that has recently happened. Wanting to do something I decided to give the profits from one photograph of a New Orleans Cemetery (see left) to Second Harvest (www.secondharvest.com).

Basically I want to offer the print for $35. The only money I will be taking out will be for postage and packing (that should only be about $2). For international orders I will need to add $5 for P&P ($40 total)

The print is exactly the same as the framed prints I sell. It is printed on 11x8.5 inch paper with an image size of 9.5 inches along the longest edge. It is also coated with a UV protection. I'm offering this print un-matted and unframed to save on cost of postage and to keep the cost down.

One concern I have is proving to people that the money will actually go to Second Harvest. I'm not sure quite how to do that. I spoke to Laura Traut at Second Harvest and she agreed that the best way was to post the names of the people or company donating (with a link to their site if they wish) CHECK THE LIST HERE. Whatever I do not spend on postage will of course be added to the fund.

If you don't want a print but would like to make a donation to Second Harvest you can visit: www.secondharvest.com

I got a call asking to donate a copy of the photo to a silent auction being held at Jacques Imo Restaurant in New York. If you're in the area in September 14th please stop by and show your support. Goto their web site at: www.jacquesimosnyc.com for more details.

UPDATE: The donated print raised over $200 at the silent auction. The reception coincides with the Escondido “2nd Saturday Art Walk”. Hope to see you there!

There was a great turnout on the 14th May. I’d also like to thank Donna Cosentino (the Gallery Director) for hosting the reception and for doing such a great job in hanging all 34 photos in the show.

I always say that the most important thing about looking at a photograph is the stories that you can tell about it, not the story the photographer imagined. One couple I talked to told me of how a photograph I took in Manayunk, PA made them feel home-sick for Philly. I shared stories of walking through Paris with a woman who was born and raised there. Talking to these people made me notice things about some of my photographs that I had never seen before.

February, 2005 4 Photos in F-Stop Magazine

For the third month running my photographs will be in f-stop magazine. The show runs from June 11 until July 5th. and is located 20 miles north of San Diego, at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. in the city of Del Mar, California.
